A little bit of Everything
Some bikes don’t fit easily into categories and we’ve included
them here.
Dirt
Jumping/Urban Assault
If you live in a large city, getting to the trails can often be
a weekend-only event. Jumping bikes are overbuilt hard tail mountain bikes
which are equally at home tackling jumps and stairs or hitting the singletrack
on weekends. They feature super durable frames and wheels and most often
big suspension forks to absorb the big hits. Ridden in the city or on the
trails, they pack a lot of fun into one machine.
Hybrids
If you want to ride to work, do a little touring, and even jump
onto back roads or converted rail bed trails, a hybrid could be just the
thing. Though they look a bit like a city bike, they have fatter tyres
and are constructed to handle well on gravel paths and trails. Not as fast
as a pure road bike, or as strong as a real mountain bike, the Hybrid really
is the Jack of all Trades in the bike family.
Cyclo-Cross
Cyclo-Cross racing is a distinctly European fall and winter sport
which combines short, fast off-road courses with mandatory running sections,
and even a little pavement thrown in. The Cross bike is a fusion of a road
racing bike, with more powerful brakes, more forgiving steering for the
mud and wet, and room to put fatter, treaded tires into the frame. Many
experienced riders swear that their cross bike is the only bike they need.
